Never thought I’d die fighting side by side with an Elf

The dynamic in this 14 seconds is awesome. When Gimli says “Never thought I’d die fighting side by side with an Elf.“, he both sounds sarcastic and sad. But not because he still has a grudge or is afraid of death, but because he exactly knows how he and Legolas have formed a bond. His sarcasm and sadness are aimed at his former self. Then Legolas delivers his line “What about side by side with a friend?“, he aknowledges this bond as well. With that small grin on his face, he speaks the same language as Gimli, portraying a deeper understanding of him. This finally cracks Gimli up and makes him being honest and sincere about his friendship with Legolas: “Aye. I could do that.“ Dunno if it was down to the actors or the directing, but they fucking nailed those three lines. This little scene basically is a finale to their whole character arc.
