Outshining Humans: How AI-Powered Humanoid Robots are Changing the World! | Pro Robots
If you were asked to name two areas that could really change the world and humanity’s future in the next few years, what would you name? (pause)
For us, it is definitely robotics and artificial intelligence. In the past, these fields developed overlapping, but not merging. But now everyone understands that the time has come to combine them, in order to achieve a real breakthrough in technology!
The combination of robotics and artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize the world and humanity’s future. Moravec’s paradox, which states that low-level sensorimotor operations require enormous computational resources while highly cognitive processes require relatively little computation, is a principle in these fields. As a result, it is easier to teach robots to play chess than to pour water into a glass.
A recent study by scientists at the University of Sheffield in the UK found that it makes no sense to create a more advanced artificial intelligence without allowing it to develop in the most natural way - through learning and evolving from real interactions with the world. To facilitate this, AI’s architecture must be built like a human brain, with all the physical capabilities and senses of humans, such as sight and touch. The most obvious way to do this is to combine AI with a humanoid robot body. Techno-leaders like Elon Musk and Sam Alman, as well as technogiants such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, have long since reached the same conclusion. It appears that we are entering a new era of artificial intelligence and humanoid robots.
The first descriptions of mechanical devices that imitated human appearance and functions can be found in the works of scientists several centuries before our era. The antikytherian mechanism, a kind of on-board computer from about the 2nd century BC, is considered the first computer. It had the functions of a calendar, a map of the solar system, an astronomical clock, and a calculating machine capable of determining the movements of celestial bodies.
Humanoid robots that looked and acted like humans began to appear in the mid-20th century. The Darpa Robotics Challenge, held from 2012 to 2015, was the first striking appearance of humanoid robots on YouTube. Back then, these machines had to perform quite human tasks, such as driving a golf cart to a test site, opening a door, and using power tools, all within 50 minutes. The competition made the robots famous, although not as super advanced devices, but as a source of viral videos and memes with endless epic fails. These robots have come a long way since then, becoming smarter, more agile, and more graceful.
Last year, the finals of the Avatar XPrize competition were held, in which humanoid robots had to perform complex tasks to realize various missions on the moon in avatar mode. The competition has been held for four years, with a total of 99 teams from around the world competing for the $10 million prize pool. We went to the finals of this competition and did a full feature on the English Channel. You can check it out in the link below!
According to Jerry Pratt, whose team won the last Darpa competition, there have been significant advances in technology for humanoid robots in the last 10 years, so real intelligent humanoids are just around the corner.
