From 1847 until 1854, he became a student of Hans Leganger Reusch. He opened his first exhibition in Bergen. Painter worked with H. L. Reusch. In 1855 Germany went to Düsseldorf. From 1855 to 1858, he became a student of Hans Fredrik Gude in Düsseldorf. During this time he worked on dramatization of reality. Besides Gude, he was influenced by August Cappelen and Erik Bodom. 19th century is the most important painters of late romance in Norway. All his work reflected motives from Norway.
