Euromos Archaeological Site, Muğla | Turkish Museums

Euromos means “strength”, a well-deserved name for one of the strongest cities of the region in ancient times. Today, the Zeus Temple built in the 2nd century AD serves as a witness to those times. It’s actually one of the best-preserved of its kind in Asia, though the reason for this is quite sad. The city was abandoned following a plague, so the temple was never converted to a church, which was the fate of many temples in Anatolia during the rise of Christianity. The 16 columns that still stand bear the names of the people who sponsored them, including a doctor named Menektrates and his daughter Tryphena. Hidden behind an olive grove, the ancient city feels isolated from modern times. Come explore this incredible piece of history.
