She sang traditional folk songs as well as the nirgun songs of Kabir, Bhavani Nath, Gorakhnath and other mystics, which she learned from her aunt Shabana’s satsangs. She belonged to the Dholi community of musicians and drummers, who derive their name from the dhol (drum), who traditionally performed for their patrons to make auspicious the start of any new project. Jamali Bai was always accompanied on the harmonium by her husband, Ramzan Khan, whom she considered her primary musical friend and guru. Jamali Bai passed away in July 2016.
