Why do refugees and asylum-seekers flee to Britain, rather than trying to rebuild their countries?

Between 1939 and 1945, things were very grim for those living in Britain. The men, however, fought for their country, while the women and children stayed at home and faced the Blitz. Why can’t foreigners whose countries are facing troubles do the same? Why do they abandon their own nations and come here?
