Mussolini’s Column (1929)

The River Tiber, Rome, Italy. Full titles read: “MUSSOLINI’S COLUMN - World’s largest shaft of marble - 60 ft. long, weighing 250 tons - reaches Rome, towed by 7 towboats up historic River Tiber to the great Forum erected by Nation to Il Duce.“ L/S of several boats and ships moving up the River Tiber. L/S of tugboat towing large platform with the shaft of marble on it. Intertitle reads: “A year ago, the titanic task of lowering it from of mountain quarry 2,600 ft. high was started...“ L/S of large wooden casket being moved by many workmen. They are aided by a series of large ropes and rollers. Intertitle reads: “Then - 80 oxen dragged it the 9 mile journey to the sea.“ L/S’s of long line of Ox pulling the casket.
