Khobayti music was originally used for zar spirit rituals where attendees would experience “istinzal“ (spirit possession). The common percussion section of the khobayti consists up to 4 frame drums of different sizes, a zir and a derbuka. ------------------------------- More on the rhythms from the Arabian Peninsula can be found in the book “The Percussion Ensemble of the Arabian Peninsula“ by Tarek Yamani & Rony Afif which provides descriptions and transcriptions of 36 rhythms from Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE.
