North Highland Reel / Às, a Thòisich! / Miss Girdle Three traditional reels which I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember. ’Às, a Thòisich!’ which translates as ‘Be off, MacIntosh!’ can be found in many old manuscripts and is likely a reference to the last clan battle which took place on Scottish soil, in Lochaber in 1688. The Battle of Mulroy (Blàr a’ Mhaoil Ruaidh) was fought by the MacDonalds of Keppoch, supported by Clan Cameron, against Clan MacIntosh who were backed by the Mackenzies and Hanoverian government troops. Despite being heavily outnumber, the MacDonalds won the battle and re-claimed their hereditary lands, hence the tune title ‘Be off, MacIntosh!’. #celticmusic #uilleannpipes #scottishmusic #irishmusic
