The strandbeests learn to capture wind from all angles, allowing them to walk in any direction independent of the wind direction. I plan to post more detailed information on the development of the strandbeests on my website in the near future.
The new larger strandbeest is based on @diywalkers7898’s Strider v3 linkage, it works wonderfully but I replaced the long metal rods with a heavy duty frame to maintain rigidity. The traditional strandbeest-linkage walker is very similar to that of Generation 1 but the gait of the legs has been optimized using diywalker’s linkage simulator. Both walkers have been fitted with a wind vane so as mentioned above, they can walk in any direction regardless of wind direction. As always, these strandbeests are 100% wind powered with no electronic components. Many of you ask how they can walk despite the great friction. For one, there is actually little friction in the strandbeests and they can easily be pushed on their own. However, the large gear reduction from the blades is really what allows these to walk well. Although slow, these strandbeests have plenty of power to move themselves and overcome any small obstacles on the ground.
It took several beach visits to make this video. Many times there was no wind, and I was lucky to catch the sunset and have plentiful wind while filming this video.
