1969-70 Boston Bruins regular-season highlights
Originally aired on WSBK TV-38 in Boston, re-run on NESN’s Fan Attic
Announcer: Don Earle
Bobby Orr and the Big, Bad, Bruins rampaged through the NHL in the 1969-70 season, then beat the Rangers (six games), Blackhawks (sweep), and Blues (sweep) in the playoffs to secure their first Stanley Cup in 29 years.
Boy wonder defenseman Orr, who scored the Cup winner in overtime and claimed every postseason award in sight, couldn’t have done it without such great players, and characters, as high-scoring slot monster Phil Esposito, sweepchecking swashbuckler Derek Sanderson, wandering and clutch goalie Gerry Cheevers, and the rest. Their one-for-all, all-for-one attitude shines through in these highlights, especially the brawls. And the fans loved them, making sure to have the tin foil positioned just-so on the rabbit ears of their TVs so they could get the games on TV-38. You had to be there for Orr mania; I pity those who weren’t!
