Dunblane Massacre - Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne Visit Victims and Survivors (1996)
On 17 March 1996, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne, Princess Royal visited the Scottish town of Dunblane. In doing so, the Queen was carrying out one of the most important duties of a modern constitutional monarch: that of bringing comfort to the public in the aftermath of a tragedy. Days before, on 13 March, Dunblane Primary School was targetted in the worst mass shooting in UK history, when 16 primary school pupils and their teacher, Gwen Mayor, were killed and 15 others injured by 43-year-old gunman Thomas Hamilton. After laying flowers at the gates of Dunblane Primary School, the Queen and her daughter spoke to mourners gathered nearby. “You can hardly believe this sort of thing can happen in a school,“ the Queen was heard saying. Later, the Monarch visited Stirling Royal Infirmary where she and the Princess Royal spoke to victims and survivors as well as the hospital staff looking after them.
