Quirkiest Christmas Traditions from Around the World

There’s more to the holidays than snow, Santa and stockings. Some festive traditions from around the world are definitely worth knowing about! In Oaxaca, Mexico, each December 23rd there’s a radish sculpture contest. Known as the ‘Night Of The Radishes’ both artisans and amateurs display their exceptional carvings, and the winner receives a cash prize! Catalan nativity scenes have a rather unusual addition... a defecating figure, known as the Caganer - which translates as the c****er. The rude little figure can take many forms, and is thought to have gained popularity in the 17th and 18th century, although no one’s sure exactly how he came about, in Catalan, one thing is for sure - Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a pooping figurine. In Austria, St Nicholas has an evil accomplice called the Krampus. People dress as this demon and roam the street frightening little most little children. And in Italy, people celebrate La Befana, a good witch who hands out presents. As legend has it, this celebration honours a witch who missed the birth of the baby Jesus because she was too busy cleaning, so she has taken to her broom every year since in an effort to find him.
