Dmitry Kabalevsky: Poem of Struggle Op .12 (1932)

Dmitry Kabalevsky is today remembered as the most important musical educator of the Soviet Union. His piano training for children, which is quite considerable in amount and excellent in quality, could even escape through the infamous Iron Curtain and be taught equally in the Capitalist West. Kabalevsky held nonetheless great compositional powers, especially for sticky, easygoing melodies, which was nevertheless tarnished through the decades as he became somehow associated with Stalin’s cruel bureaucrat art apparatus. His Poem of Struggle is one of his earliest cantatas, designed for the 15th Anniversary of the October Revolution, which would later be seen as one of the foremost guidelines upon which a patriotic cantata could be composed.
