Lijiang (丽江), located in the northwest of Yunnan Province (云南省), China, is a prefecture-level city known for its rich history and cultural heritage. With an area of 21,219 square kilometers and a population of 1,253,878 as of the 2020 census, Lijiang boasts a diverse landscape that includes the UNESCO Heritage Site, the Old Town of Lijiang. This ancient town is celebrated for its unique historical architecture and an intricate ancient water-supply system. The region has been a hub of human activity since as far back as 100,000 years ago, with evidence of late Paleolithic people in the area. Lijiang’s history is marked by its role as a political, commercial, and cultural center for the local Naxi people (纳西族) and other ethnic groups, particularly during the period from 658 AD to 1107 AD in the Baisha Old Town.
