An Islamist lone wolf terrorist who wanted to blow up a hospital before launching a knife attack on fleeing nurses was “self radicalised” after viewing jihadist videos on TikTok. Mohammad Farooq was arrested after taking a pressure cooker bomb, designed to be twice as powerful as those used by the Boston Marathon bombers, to St James’s Hospital in Leeds in January 2023. Sheffield Crown Court heard Farooq had immersed himself in an “extremist Islamic ideology“ and went to the hospital to “seek his own martyrdom“ through a “murderous terrorist attack“. He was only stopped after a patient who was outside having a cigarette managed to talk him down and convinced him to surrender to police.
