THE TALE
Elves enjoy meeting around a fire to tell ancient tales and legends. During one of these meetings, Silme, a Maia of the world of Arda (a primeval spirit existing since the beginning of time), tells the tale of the Two Holy Trees. She describes them as two wonderful trees, as she witnessed at first hand, and shows the last two ever existing leaves, having been collected by herself: one is silvery and the other golden. The two trees, called Laurelin and Telperion, used to enlighten a part of Arda by means of their mystical light and were the best creation of Yavanna, the Power of Nature.
Yet, while Silme is describing the Trees, the Elves remind her that they died due to Melkor, the Dark Lord, who pierced them and had their essence drunk by Ungoliant, a creature that used to weave cobs of darkness, feeding herself with light.
Silme replies remembering how, despite of that, Yavanna and Nienna went to the dying trees: Yavanna’s song and Nienna’s tears succeeded in making a silver flower sprout from Telpe
