Garda Athletes In Training (1927)

Item title reads: “Garda Athletes in Training for the Garda Sports Week commencing June 22nd .“ Ireland M/S of a group playing hockey or shinty. It looks quite dangerous. A team dig their heels in hard for a tug of war. They take the strain, and bend their knees in unison. A sergeant instructs them. They then take the strain from behind, again bending together. Others tackle the hurdles in a race, and some do sprint starts. Individuals show high jump skills, with a scissor jumps, and a tuck jump. One man, (he looks like Hitler), tries the discus! To finish, the men, in twos, practice side bends. One man places a foot on the knee of his kneeling partner and leans right over, arm stretched out. Note: This all looks hilarious. The tug of war is great for rhythm. The side bends could be exercises for advanced window cleaning, or perhaps men practicing to be aeroplanes. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ.
