Volendam is a fishing village on the borders of the former Zuiderzee. Since 1932 the Zuiderzee has been closed off from the North Sea by a 30 km long dyke called “De Afsluitdijk“. This dramatically changed the life style of the fishermen in Volendam. No longer could they fish for sea fish but had to change to the fishing of fresh water fish, including eals. This film shows the Volendammers going about their every-day business. Most of them are dressed in their local costume, typical for the Volendam folklore. The Volendam people never changed to become involved in agricultural activities, despite the efforts of the Dutch government to encourage them to change their occupation as mentioned in this film.
