The Hoatzin’s Ancient Claw

The Hoatzin is a bird that lives in the Amazon. As the Academy’s collection manager for ornithology explains, its nestlings have an ancient connection to Archaeopteryx and dinosaurs. It has a claw on each wing. All birds have the genes to grow this claw, but, with the exception of the Hoatzin, they lose it while developing in the egg.
