He had studied since childhood naval military science with Murakami Kurando from the Murakami Suigun (feudal navy). Kuniyoshi wandered around the country for some time and gradually came to realize the potential of marksmanship. He subsequently wrote a book on the topic, the “Gobūsantō Funa-ikusa Yōhō”. Kuniyoshi was a relative of the Mōri Clan. He also liked the tale of “Mōri no Shigeru” and using it as a pun, he decided to change his name to Morishige. Kuniyoshi’s son, Kunimitsu, received the formal authorization from Kyōgoku Suō no Kami, a shogunate official, to use Morishige as his family name and as his school’s name. At age 22 he resigned from his position in the administration and embarked on a Musha Shugyō (warrior errantry) journey. Around age 40 he devised a new, elegant, almost artistic, marksmanship system divided into two series of 23 and 10 Kata. Kunimitsu taught many shooting techniques and gunpowder recipes, devised a modern mass training system and ranks layout that were used by armies, and thus formulated the entire curriculum of the Morishige Ryū Hōjutsu.
