Most of the time, the trips included a visit to Spain, so that contestants of Hispanic descent could learn about their Spanish heritage. This travelogue from 1970 shows the royal group touring Europe through England, France, and Spain, and finally sailing over the Mediterranean Sea to Morocco. The film has photography by Jack Jarvis, edited by Carl Goldman of WFLA TV, narrated by Paul Jones, and the film is processed by Leo Fasil. “1970 Latin American Fiesta Tour” title banner (00:08). According to an online source, the first major Hispanic festival in Tampa was in 1927, a street dance staged to celebrate a prosperous year for the cigar industry. Hispanic community leaders began selecting queens at the annual carnivals. Initially, many of the women were “cigar maids,“ attractive representatives of various cigar factories. Social clubs and businesses also sponsored princesses. Tampa fiesta queens and their courts traveled to Cuba, Mexico and New York during the 1940s and 1950s to continue good communications with other Hispanic communities.
