First written by two French teenagers, Jean Bernard and Jean-Marie Prima, in the 1920s, the song was popularized by Dutch band ’Bots’ in the 70s where its original revolutionary lyrics and distinct melody spread to the German Democratic Republic (DDR). The song was then popularized in the Eastern Bloc and among communist and revolutionary groups, and even the IRA due to its performance with altered lyrics by the popular German communist rock and folk group, Oktoberklub.
