Alex Rudinger - Whitechapel - “The Ones That Made Us“

Despite the fact that I’m no longer with Whitechapel, I’m still immensely proud of ’KIN’. So awhile back I recorded a few more play-throughs for some of my favorite tunes from the album - while the material was still relatively ’fresh’ for me. Here’s the first (of 4) - “The Ones That Made Us“. This song in particular holds some significance to me - mainly because of how we wrote it. For the most part, ’Chapels writing process starts with Ben, Wade, or Zach (at least, this is how it went for ’KIN’). One (or multiple) of them sit down & work on riffs / song structure together, & program drums accordingly. They’d send me a skeleton with their drum programming - to sort of show me the general feel they had in mind for parts throughout the song(s). I’d kinda take it from there, & expand upon certain things - adding my own subtleties & fills. But overall, the initial / general ’feel’ they’d program would remain. “The Ones That Made Us“ was the only track that started a bit differently --- I can’t play guitar, but I still like to try & help / contribute when writing. So I decided to notate some random drum ideas, but in a ’song structure’ of sorts. I sent these ideas (with notes!) to the guys, & one afternoon Wade & Zach sat down & started messing around with em’. & to make a long story short, that’s how this song was born! In the end, plenty of my initial drum parts ended up changing (some more than others), but most of the core parts remained exactly the same. As they started writing around the drums, they’d have their own ideas, & deviate from my original ’structure’ / parts (which I was totally on board with, obviously). My only objective was to contribute in some capacity (or at least, contribute more than a drummer might usually be able to), so even if they’d only have used a few of the parts that I wrote, I would’ve been stoked. So the fact that the majority of my parts remained, & that in general they helped spark ideas for them to write a full song, really made me happy. I think the only part that was written ’from scratch’ (on drums) was the bridge --- Wade sorta wrote the rhythm / riffs for that after the fact, & then we sat together & worked on the drums for it. So yeah - this song holds a lot of significance to me, because I think it’s the one that I had the most involvement in on the entire album. Honestly, I really loved the writing chemistry that I had with those dudes. I mean, given the circumstances, I know that moving on was the right thing for me to do. But honestly ya’ll - it’ll always break my heart a bit, too. I was a fan of the band before playing with them, & it meant a lot to me to represent them & write with them. At any rate, I’ll always be immensely proud of this album, so I hope you enjoy it (this playthrough, AND the album!).
