Shafiqa Al-Qebtiya: Candlestick Belly Dance - شفيقه القبطيه: رقصة الشمعدان

Hind Rostom - Nicknamed Rita Hayworth of the east - shows her skill in a talented candlestick belly dance in Shafiqa al Qebtiya “Shafiqa the Copt“ movie produced in 1963 and based upon the real tragedy of Egypt’s most celebrated belly dancer in the 19th century. The Real Shafiqa was the first dancer to devise this pattern of candlestick movements. Her theater, called Alf Leilah “A thousand nights“ was always crowded by the richest most high ranked and powerful men. Stories about her richness have always been told: That she used to dance in a slipper with a golden heel and the ground upon which she danced was always shining by the gold coins thrown by her fans. After the dance, the artist would rest and the most powerful and richest of her fans would only wish to wash her feet with champagne!
