Blazing Barrels (1966)

Ottery St Mary, Devon. In this village on Guy Fawkes day we see the local custom of men and boys wearing large mittens and running through the streets with a blazing barrel of tar! At dusk, boys carry small blazing barrels. It looks like a kind of a relay race. A crowd stands around watching. A few floats from the carnival procession are seen at night during this Festival of Fire. More blazing barrel shots; these ones are larger and much more fierce; they are carried aloft by the men of the village. Commentator says the villages have been performing this pageant since 1668 as a tribute to the landing of King William III. Cuts exist - see separate record. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ.
