botfly removal from kitten

Removal of 2nd botfly larvae from a 12 week old kitten. Miss Nina made a full recovery and happily became an indoor cat. How do animals get these nasty things anyways?! The animal picks up the larvae on their fur and then it travels into the body through the mouth or nose and burrows through the tissues. Usually in cats they end up around the neck area but around the eyes or nasal cavity is not uncommon. The larvae makes a small air hole and then matures under the skin. When it is ready the mature larvae comes out and leaves a giant hole. As they develop the area will swell up and is often mistaken for an abcess. The small air hole is mistaken for a drainage tract however if you stare at the hole for a minute you will see movement as the botfly larvae come up to the surface to breathe. sometimes they are surgically removed but the most common way is to smother it with vaseline or another substance so that the larvae is forced to poke out of the hole. then you gotta grab it and gently pull it out, beca
