Today I have the pleasure of speaking with a lawyer at the bar here in Korea who is poised to become a judge at the bench over in The Hague. Doctor Paek Kee-bong thank you for being here and congratulations on your latest career advancement. 1) Doctor Paek, let’s begin with a few words about your current feelings as you look to start your nine-year term at the ICC this year. 2) Doctor Paek, I understand candidates from 13 countries were in the election to fill 6 judicial vacancies. You secured 83 votes out of 123. How did you seek to appeal to the voters? 3) Doctor Paek, you’ve worked both as a prosecutor and a lawyer. What more can you tell us about the merits of this reality, especially in enhancing your role as a judge? 4) And Doctor Paek, before we go any further, could you tell us a bit about the International Criminal Court and its role. 5-1) Doctor Paek, walk us through your interest in international criminal law. I mean, how did it begin? 5-2) Doctor Paek, staying with your professional journey. As mentioned earlier, you started your career as a prosecutor at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office in 1992. What can you tell us about your work back then? 6) Doctor Paek, back in March this year, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin amid allegations of mass abductions of Ukrainian children. What are the broader implications of this arrest warrant? 7) Doctor Paek, back in November, South Africa referred Israel to the ICC over its military operation in Gaza, calling for an investigation into war crimes. Israel, for its part, has accused the Palestinian militant group Hamas of similar crimes. What are your thoughts on the tragedy unfolding in Gaza amid the fresh fighting between Israel and Hamas? 8) Doctor Paek, here on the peninsula. What role can the ICC play in tackling the rampant violations of human rights in North Korea? 9) Doctor Paek, do share with us some of your plans as an ICC judge.
