This silent home movie shows various scenes, including footage of the ocean liner SS Conte Biancamano in New York City in the later years of the 1920’s. It also features footage shot near Smith’s Baths at the Steeplechase Pier in Atlantic City, as well as in Holland.
Much of the film shows the cruise aboard the SS Conte Biancamano ocean liner. It also shows with great detail the fashion of the traveler in the 1920’s, including flappers. Fashion was known for being glitz and glam as many women wore pearls and long jackets lined with thick tufts of fur and simply cut dresses underneath. Men dressed mostly in casual suits. The film opens with long shots of well-dressed vacationers (:10). Close shots of the women show the snug cloche, felt and bucket hats indicative of the era (:31). Guests wave off the camera man (1:11). The outside of the ship is captured (1:29). New York City skyscrapers rise in the background (1:16). Lifesaving boats hang to the side (1:23). Women hold flowers to be photographed with (2:13). Women wearing thick fur lined coats stand next to men in straw hats and casual suits (3:04). Passengers dance and fool around in front of the camera (4:10). The camera moves over the cruiser liner (6:22). Soldiers on horseback line the shore line (6:42) as part of a parade. Waves crash along the shoreline (7:31). At (7:49) the Steeplechase pier and Smith’s Baths in Atlantic City is briefly visible. A young girl runs towards the camera with a long fish hanging from her mouth (8:18). The traditional Ford Model T’s appear parked between trees (8:30) at a family home in the countryside. A family in formal attire moves towards the camera for photographs (8:58). A girl dances about in a log dress with pearls (9:05). A small black kitten toys with a piece of wood (9:37). A garden sits within a courtyard (10:05). Footage at (10:44) is lenticular Kodacolor film of Holland. Lily pads float in the water as cotton wads wave in the breeze, ready for plucking (10:56). A windmill spins for power (10:59). The camera moves over homes lining the water (11:32). The trip stops at a café and tavern (12:05). A game of polo erupts (12:24). The film wraps up as well dressed people parade in front of the camera, possibly as part of a wedding party (13:05).
SS Conte Biancamano was an Italian ocean liner launched in 1925, built in the Scottish shipyard William Beardmore & Co. in Dalmuir, near Glasgow. She was built for the Genovese shipping company Lloyd Sabaudo, operator of Conte Rosso and Conte Verde. The engine, equipped with two steam turbines double reduction unit and two propellers, allowed her to reach a speed of 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph), and vented in two funnels. She housed 180 passengers in first class, 220 in second class, 390 in economic class and 2,660 in third class.
