Niger colonel announces military coup on national TV

Members of Niger’s military claimed to have taken power in an announcement on national television late on Wednesday. Col Amadou Abdramane, flanked by nine other officers, read out a statement hours after troops blockaded the presidential palace. The apparent coup is said to be led by the head of a regional political and security group.
