“Poisonous strategic environment“ is a loaded phrase from the brilliant strategist John Mearsheimer. The United States—whether intentionally or not—has planted a ticking time bomb under Europe. If Mearsheimer is correct in predicting that President Putin will drive a hard bargain—and there’s little reason to doubt it—the number of European countries willing to gamble on Russia’s imminent defeat and continue supporting Ukraine is likely to shrink dramatically, further deepening the divide within Europe. This rift could ultimately lead to the breakup of the EU. And it’s unlikely the United States will rush to help; in fact, they might actually prefer it. Britain will likely be pleased to see it too.
