🌀China’s mega city of Shanghai hit by Typhoon Bebinca, the biggest storm in seven decades
Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in Shanghai’s Pudong district at 7:30 AM on Sunday, bringing top wind speeds of over 42 meters per second near its eye. As a precaution, more than 414,000 residents in the bustling megacity were relocated by Sunday, prompting the closure of all highways.
In response to the severe weather conditions, all flights from Pudong and Hongqiao airports were canceled starting at 8 PM on Sunday. To ensure safety, the city switched off all landscape lighting for Sunday and Monday and suspended ferry services, halted several train lines, and closed ports, bridges, and highways.
Popular tourist destinations, including Shanghai Disney Resort, also shuttered their doors on Monday. More than 2,500 rescue teams, totaling 56,000 personnel, were on standby for what is considered the strongest cyclone to hit Shanghai since Typhoon Gloria in 1949.
As of midday Monday, the center of Typhoon Bebinca had shifted to Kunshan in neighboring Jiangsu Province; however, its eastern circulation continued to affect Shanghai, causing strong winds and rain, particularly in the eastern districts. Fortunately, weather conditions are expected to improve across most of Shanghai by the evening.
