After fighting with the remains of the Italian Army in Russia and defeating the Red Army at Nikolayevka, alpino Chiapponi can now head towards home. Wounded, with little or no food, 8 hard days of marching in freezing temperatures await him. But when he finally boards the train that will take him back to Italy, he will find a much-changed country, one ravaged by civil war and summary executions.
