Westminster Abbey Newspaper clip states although the Princess Elizabeth attends the Maundy ceremony in place of the King, she is not taking part in the historic ceremony. The token act of ’washing the feet’ of 54 poor and aged people - one for each year of the sovereign’s life - derives from Christ’s act of humility to hid disciples and can only be performed by the King or the Lord High Almoner.
