The lighter was handmade by someone during the war. It was not designed to have the wick and cotton replaced because it was soldered shut. I desoldered the triangle pieces of copper to remove the “hinge“ and then I desoldered teh bottom of teh fuel tank to remove the cotton and old wick. I cleaned most of the oxidation off with vinegar. Then the parts were sanded with multiple grits of sandpaper up to 2000 grits and polished with a buffing wheel. New wick and cotton were inserted and I made a new hinge to replace the old one. All the pieces were soldered back on using a heat gun. When using a heat gun it’s important to make sure other solders on the part don’t meltand all the parts don’t fall off.
