Hiking Hints (1933)

Chilterns, Buckinghamshire. Lovely footage of a group of young people enjoying hiking through the countryside. Film begins with good shots of the hikers showing us the soles of their hiking boots. All nailed. Three different rucksacks are shown. Lots of good footage of them walking, eating their picnic lunch, jumping over gates, reading maps, crossing the Misbourne River, walking through a farmyard etc. There are a few “oldies“ but mostly the hikers are young people. John E. Walsh the Daily Herald Hiking Expert and Editor of Hiker and Camper does the narration. He also appears in the film. The narration is charming - lots of commentary about how good hiking is for you and how lovely the British countryside is for hiking. It is noticeable that all the women wear skirts.
