Police found chainsaw in possession of former logger suspected of cutting down iconic sycamore tree

Police investigating the felling of the iconic Sycamore Gap tree have recovered a massive chainsaw from the barn of a former lumberjack who has denied any involvement in the crime. The tree, which was estimated to be several hundred years old, was found cut down on September 28, 2023, in Northumberland National Park. It had been voted English Tree of the Year in 2016 and was featured in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. A 69-year-old man, Walter Renwick, who was evicted from his home on a nearby farm just weeks before the tree was felled, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. He has since been released on bail pending further investigations. Police raided Renwick’s barn on Friday, September 29, and recovered a large chainsaw.
