#VisitRussia ? Rostov-on-Don is the largest city and the center of Southern Russia, as well as the tenth most populous city in the country. It is situated on both banks of the Don River and serves as a major administrative, economic, cultural, scientific, educational, and industrial center. The city was founded by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. First, in 1749, the Temernitsky customs was established, followed by the construction of a fortress named after Dmitry Rostovsky. Many architectural monuments have been preserved in Rostov, including commercial and trading houses, mansions, and temples. The main city landmarks include Gorky Park, Bolshaya Sadovaya Street, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, the Rostov-on-Don embankment, Paramonov’s Warehouses, the Rostov Regional Museum of Local Lore, the Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts, and others.
