My lirone has 13 strings, tuned in the circle of 5ths from G# to Ab. Because the tuning pattern alternates going up or down a fourth/fifth, the tuning is “re-entrant,“ meaning the strings aren’t laid out from high to low across the bridge. This tuning allows for very tight chord voicings and a fair amount of polyphonic activity. It’s such a thrill to be able to ornament multiple voices at the same time, having “true polyphony“ as a soloist! Not a single piece of music written specifically for lirone has been found.
