This part of the Quartet is well know toady as the melody to the Deutschlandlied; the German national anthem. It was first written in 1797 as music to the poem “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser“ (“God save Franz the Emperor“) by Lorenz Leopold Haschka. It was first used as a birthday anthem for Hapsburg Emperor Francis II. This recording was done by the Kodaly Quartet in 1989.
