Gareth Pearson “Black Mountain Rag“ | Gaiero OM-13 Surfer Redwood

The wicked fast banjo-style rolls of “Black Mountain Rag“ are always a rollicking showcase piece, but Gareth Pearson takes it to the next level with his driving rhythmic sense and precise execution! We think the direct, woody tone of Mark Gaiero’s OM-13 in redwood and walnut suits it perfectly, too. Using sustainable domestic tonewoods, an organic-feeling French polish finish, and aesthetic touches that add a pop of unexpected color and asymmetry, Mark Gaiero’s guitars have a modern yet earthy character that feels perfectly Pacific Northwest to us. On this OM-13, he’s paired gorgeous black walnut (photo #6 is the one that really does it justice) with “surfer“ redwood. Unlike most sinker redwood, which is recovered from river bottoms in Northern California, Mark got this redwood from a supplier who found the log drifted ashore on the Southern Oregon coast. The combination creates a remarkable tone—woody and warm, with the redwood clarity and bite in just the right measure. The ultra-thin French polish finish helps ensure maximum responsiveness, and Mark’s one-of-a-kind rosette adds a striking flair without distracting from the woods’ natural beauty.
