Ruffed Grouse_drumming

Contact me for downloads. Male red morph Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) “drumming“ display on log near Ithaca, NY. Recorded in the Spring of 2013. The sound produced, believed at one time to have been birds’ drumming on hollow logs, is now shown to be made by the feathers through the air, and not drumming at all. It is a courtship display done by male grouse to attract female grouse, one male mating with several different female grouse.
