VOXPOP: ’Anger, apathy and mild curiosity’ East Londoners’ view of the coronation

While some fervent monarchists were camping out in London ready for the coronation of King Charles, others on Thursday (May 4) had a less than royalist view of Saturday’s parade of pomp and pageantry. In Whitechapel, a relatively poor area to the east of the city, opinions varied from downright anger through apathy to mild curiosity. A YouGov poll last month found only 33% of those asked cared about it. Another survey last week found 48% were likely to watch it on television compared to 46% who said the opposite. That contrasts with 1953 when millions thronged the streets of London and some 27 million people watched the televised ceremony for Elizabeth.
