Dispelling Stereotypes about Autism - Neil deGrasse Tyson, Dr. Paul Wang, Chuck Nice

Misconceptions and stereotypes abound about people on the Autism Spectrum, and even the language we use can be harmful and misleading, like the term “idiot savants.” In this video, Neil deGrasse Tyson explores some of these stereotypes with Dr. Paul Wang of Autism Speaks, including examples of musical geniuses on the spectrum, or the false ideas that people with autism don’t care about other people and can’t contribute to society. As co-host Chuck Nice says, better awareness of the realities of autism may lead more people knowing how to help people with autism succeed in life. This “Behind the Scenes“ video was shot during the recording of our episode, “Autism and Animal Science with Dr. Temple Grandin.“ If you’d like to listen to the full podcast, click here: Support us on Patreon: Subscribe to StarTalk: Follow StarTalk: Twitter: Facebook: Instagram: About StarTalk: Science meets pop culture on StarTalk!
