TLDR for this update: new Ristar rig, new facial expressions system, revised animations, new bird robot enemy, implemented a combo system, and preview of a boss fight with a new original boss, Mecha Song Bird.
This video introduces the finished redesigned Ristar model I shared in update #2. The old Ristar model from the first video had his 5 seconds of fame, but now he spends his days lounging in his floating bubble, drinking Hi-C and munching on mango Starburst. It took quite a bit of elbow grease to transfer all of the animations and code over to the new Ristar rig, but it’s definitely worth it - Ristar can now have more dynamic facial expressions! Only a few facial expressions are featured in this video, but with the ground work now set up, it should be a fairly quick and simple process to add a bunch more! Please note that there are still more edits to make to this version of Ristar, particularly minor proportions and texture work on the hands and feet, keep an eye out!
I’ve also revised a handful of the animations, such as Ristar’s idle and old wonky walk cycle animations, and added a few new animations as well.
Everybody likes showing off with combos, heroically bouncing from enemy to enemy with a path of destruction trailing behind, so I’ve added a combo system. When you attack an enemy, each subsequent enemy you hit without touching the ground adds to your combo count. Earn high combos to rack up your score multiplier and be rewarded with goodies, like extra gems and health pickups!
This update also sees the addition of a new (old) enemy - the robot song birds from Planet Sonata! It’s been over 25 years since Ristar faced off against these mechanical monsters, so it’s no surprise that they’ve swapped out their rusty parts and returned with some upgraded machinery. Some remain stationary and peck the heck outta you when you draw near, while others relentlessly pursue you, masterfully maneuvering ontop of their big metal orbs. Also introducing a sneak peek at the first draft of Mecha Song Bird, a massive robot bird boss who’s tasked as the guardian of a secret treasure and will do anything to keep intruders away - particularly those with 5 points and long arms.
There’s also been a lot of behind-the-scenes additions and tweaks since the last update video, a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo, so I’ll spare you the deets, but just know that the whole framework is coming along very nicely.
