’On This Day 1972: Jane Fonda Poses on North Vietnamese Anti-Aircraft Gun’ On This Day 1972, American actress and activist Jane Fonda caused massive controversy during a visit to the North Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, when she posed for cameras on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. During the Vietnam War, it was not uncommon for American civil rights activists and humanitarian workers to visit North Vietnam. It was Fonda’s posing on an anti-aircraft gun - used to shoot down American planes - that was seen as most controversial, and earned her the nickname ’Hanoi Jane’. Fonda’s visit led to her being effectively blacklisted by Hollywood for a period. Reactions to her visit reflected how divisive the war had become in American society by 1972; many of those opposed to the war - including some active servicemen - praised her, while others viewed her as a national traitor. For her part, while Fonda states she does not regret her anti-war efforts or her visit to North Vietnam, she has repeatedly apologised for posing with the anti-aircraft gun.
