What does it take to rebuild after a devastating fire? For a town like Jasper, which is currently battling its worst wildfires in a century and has already seen hundreds of structures destroyed, it could be a long road to recovery. Communities that have lived through rebuilding say the timeline really comes down to factors such as the availability of labour and how well the federal, provincial and municipal governments cooperate on releasing resources and approving permits. But they also warn that total recovery may not always be possible. “You can rebuild, but it is a scar both on the physical landscape of a community, and the soul of the people.
