‘Chicano gangs’ in Thailand adopt Mexican-American identity movement

The Chicano movement, which began in the US in the 1960s, aimed to fight for political representation and against the oppression of people of Mexican descent. In 2022 on the other side of the world, ‘gangs’ in Bangkok are celebrating Chicano culture by adopting the movement’s style of dress by wearing baggy T-shirts, jeans, bandanas and wraparound sunglasses, which are often associated with its Hollywood depiction. But members say they do not engage in violent or illegal behaviour and only seek to create a mixed “Thaino” culture.
