Some are born with imperforate hymens that fully block the vaginal canal. It’s part of the vulva and has a similar structure to the vagina. In children, it typically appears crescent-shaped but can vary. During puberty, estrogen causes changes in the hymen, making it elastic. Variations in the post-pubertal hymen range from thin and stretchy to thick and somewhat rigid. It can rarely be absent.
