Some are born with imperforate hymens that fully block the vaginal canal. It’s part of the vulva and has a similar structure to the vagina. In children, it typically appears crescent-shaped but can vary. During puberty, estrogen causes changes in the hymen, making it elastic. Variations in the post-pubertal hymen range from thin and stretchy to thick and somewhat rigid. It can rarely be absent. The hymen can tear during first intercourse, causing pain and possibly mild bleeding. Minor tears usually heal on their own without surgery. It was
