In this episode, we cover several organs and their significance: Firstly, the appendix, a small pouch attached to the large intestine, is discussed. Although its exact function is uncertain, it is not essential for survival. However, inflamed appendix can lead to appendicitis, requiring surgical removal. Next, we delve into the gallbladder, a pear-shaped organ beneath the liver. While it stores bile for digestion, the liver can produce bile directly into the small intestine, enabling individuals to live without a gallbladder. Then, we explore the spleen, which filters and removes old or damaged red blood cells and aids the immune system in fighting infections. Although the body can adapt to its absence, living without a spleen increases the risk of certain infections, necessitating precautions. Moving on to reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and testes, we learn that while they are vital for reproduction, they are not essential for overall survival. Removal of these organs, whether due to medical conditions or personal choice, does not significantly impact a person’s overall health and well-being. We also discuss the kidney, highlighting that the human body can function perfectly well with just one kidney. Living kidney donation is mentioned as a common practice, enabling healthy individuals to donate one kidney while maintaining their own well-being. Furthermore, we address the possibility of living with one lung. As each lung consists of multiple lobes, if a lung needs to be removed due to a medical condition, the remaining lung can compensate and perform the necessary respiratory functions. Lastly, we touch upon the stomach, emphasizing its crucial role in digestion. However, it is possible to live without it through a surgical procedure called gastrectomy, which involves stomach removal. After the procedure, the small intestine is connected directly to the esophagus, enabling digestion to occur. While these organs may not be essential for survival, their removal or absence can have specific implications for an individual’s health and lifestyle. As always, it is recommended to consult with a medical professional for personalized advice. Thank you for watching, and stay tuned for more informative videos in our medical series.
